Moving Through Loss
Artist Statement
This series dives into emotional states that one experiences when dealing with the loss of a loved one through three ceramic busts. My intended focus is for the viewer to experience these states of emotion conveyed within each piece. An underlying subject is primary colors and how these three bases of color become a symbolism for the three emotional states of being I am focusing on. These pieces convey depression (Blue), heart break (Red), and healing (Yellow). I chose these colors for each experience because they inherently reference them when considering moods of color. I also wanted to incorporate texture and how that interacts with the illustrative quality of other parts of the pieces. The facial expressions were rendered through illustration rather than sculpted. This allowed me to explore decorating on the surface to create the feeling I aspire for within each bust. I used my own likeness of my hands and face as a reference for the facial features and hand gestures. I chose myself as the subject matter to relate the work to myself and the grieving process I went through when losing a loved one.
